Rex Thomas

Founder, Head Coach, Program Director

I’m a father, I’m a teacher, I’m a coach. (Even went to the Olympics to do it)

I have been a part of the freeski movement since it began in the late 90’s. I began my career in traditional freestyle disciplines, making the Canadian National Development Mogul Team in 99. At this same time, I was beginning to receive recognition on the “new school” scene. In the summer of 99, I began coaching for the Whistler Summer Ski & Snowboard camp. I filmed with Poor Boyz Productions, Level 1 Productions and Heavy Hitting Films. As my journey down the path of a National Team athlete moved forward, I felt the pull towards the park and pipe grow  stronger until finally, in January 2000, while at a NorAm in Le Relais, QC, I made the decision to quit the Canadian Team. I booked a 59hr Greyhound bus ticket from Calgary, AB to Vail, CO for the US Freeskiing Open. 4 X-Games later, I found myself as the International Team Manager for Atomic Freeskiing and had the opportunity to work with the industry icons like Jossi and Byron Wells, Charlie Ager and Ian (Chug Life) Cosco. After a few years’ hiatus, I had a conversation with Sarah Burke that ultimately led me back to coaching. I coached part-time in Vancouver for a couple of years and have been running programs out of Calgary, AB, since 2014. I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics, where I had the honour of coaching 4 athletes from 3 nations (GB, NZ, IRE).

I started skiing when I was two years old. Once I was about 12 years old, I joined my first freestyle program, jumps and bumps. Then progressively moved up to increasingly competitive teams, ending my last two years on RT freeski. Some of my biggest achievements were the halfpipe World Cup, junior worlds halfpipe finals and full pipe and slope Noram spots. Some of my hobbies include skiing, trampoline, hiking, surfing, skateboarding and travelling.

In 2015, I started my ski career and instantly knew it was the place for me. I spent every moment I could skiing. After joining my first team, Bumps and Jumps, I made my way up through the Winsport teams until I joined the COT & NorAm circuit in 2021 after joining RTFreeski. I competed for 2 seasons on the circuit and competed in junior worlds in 2022. My hobbies include golfing, skateboarding, photography and rock climbing

I have been around the park-and-pipe community since I was 12 years old and have progressed from club competitions to the World Cup circuit. I had the pleasure of skiing for the Canadian halfpipe team for six years before my retirement in May of 2022. In my time of being with the team, I competed in Nor Am’s, where I podiumed and won on multiple
occasions, as well as on the World Cup circuit for four of my six years, making multiple finals. On top of the results, I had the opportunity of being coached and mentored by some of the best
skiers on the planet, Rex included.

Since my retirement, I have wanted to give back to the ski community for all it has given me, and what better way to do so than by coaching? My goals are to pass on my knowledge
of the sport to the younger generations, whether that be teaching tricks, helping deal with competition stress, or simply being a positive voice at training. As well, I want to be a role
model that my athletes can look up to and seek guidance from, as I know how much of an effect my past coaches have had on my life. With these goals in mind, I hope to assist all my
athletes in reaching whatever goals they have in mind.

Assistant Slope Coach

Dakota is a style king. That has always been his forte. making every trick and action he does on skis look smooth and effortless. But don’t let that fool you. Dakota was a fierce competitor on the Slopestyle Circuit for years. With multiple top 5 finishes at FIS NorAm and AFP Gold and Platinum level events around the world.

He’s one of the most genuine people you will ever meet and his smile and love for the sport are infectious.

After a few years his return has sparked a  revitalized love for the sport. He has an incredible wealth of knowledge that he is more than eager to share with his pupils. His coaching style is much like his skiing style, smooth and relaxed but very much with a “Lets get it done” attitude.

I started skiing when I was 3; my Dad is an Olympic racer, so he got me into it early. I skied mostly recreationally until I was 15, when I joined my first club, the Calgary Freeriderz, and began to develop my love for freestyle skiing. I spent 2 years competing in Canada cups and provincial competitions before turning to coaching and giving back to the community that did so much for me. I’m very passionate about skiing and the ski community, and I hope to pass that on to every athlete I coach. In the summer, I like to skateboard, mountain bike and hike/backpack.

I began skiing when I was 2 years old, first in racing, then in freestyle, after my dad joked that I was bad at racing. This transition turned out to be a great decision, as I podiumed at multiple events, most notably winning the NorAm Cup Overall title in 2023, placing in the top 10 in a World Cup final, and competing for Canada at the Youth Olympics in 2020. I always enjoyed all disciplines; however, halfpipe was the one I excelled at. Ultimately, it earned me a spot on the Canadian NextGen Team for two years before my retirement.

While injuries eventually led me to retire from professional competition, my love for this sport hasn’t faded; it has just evolved. Building on my competitive background, I am now using that experience to coach in the community. To me, being a role model for young girls in this sport is a true blessing, and I’m dedicated to helping them find their own path. When I’m not at the hill, I’m usually still somewhere outside. I’m an avid fisherman and love nothing more than being in the outdoors or travelling to find a new adventure.

I started skiing when I was 4, then got into freestyle at 7, and I’ve loved it ever since. From my first competition, I knew it was something I wanted to keep pushing in. Over the years, I worked my way up to competing at my first NorAm, won Junior Nationals in 2022, and had multiple top-3 finishes at Canada Cup events in 2024.

After dealing with two back-to-back injuries, I decided to step away from competing and focus on school. I’m currently working toward a degree in kinesiology, with plans to go into physiotherapy.

Even though I’ve retired from competing, my love for the sport and being outside in the mountains has not changed. I am very excited to pass on everything I’ve learned to the next generation of athletes and help them to progress in any way I can. Outside of skiing, I really enjoy camping, hiking, biking, and going to the gym.

Bella Farris

Grom Squad & Intermediate Park Coach

I grew up skiing on the East Coast. Ever since I was little, I’ve been in the park following my big brother and his friends around. I spent a lot of years in our local bumps and jumps group, competing within Nova Scotia and going to Quebec a few times a year for comps as well. Since injuring myself a few times, I’ve stepped back from competing and started coaching more. Fortunately, since moving to Calgary this past winter and joining RT I’ve realized this is what I love to do. I love coaching the groms and helping them discover their love for freestyle, as well as watching them figure out the fundamentals of this sport! When I’m not at the ski hill, I’m usually at the barn or competing with my horse, Crunch.

Cam SKinner

Slope & Pipe Development Coach

I started skiing when I was 4 and moved into freestyle when I was 12 I started off with being on the Winsport teams then switched to RT Freeski where I stayed for multiple years competing in slopestyle then eventually halfpipe, I competed in the nor-am circuit for 2 years and did the Calgary World Cup but eventually had to retire due to injuries and to focus on school, although I no longer compete, I am very passionate about passing on my knowledge to the next generation of athletes.

Parker Bryant

Slope & Pipe Development Coach

I started skiing at age 4 and discovered my passion for freestyle skiing at 12, focusing on both slopestyle and halfpipe. I spent my entire freestyle career with RTFreeski, where I grew not only as an athlete but as a person through years of commitment, challenge, and progression. My biggest competitive achievement was earning full NorAm starts in halfpipe.
